The national debt just passed $22 trillion for the first time, after being just half that a decade ago. What matters is the debt-to-GDP level, which is not in the danger zone now but threatens to Gross Federal Debt: That’s the gross amount of debt outstanding issued by the US Treasury. “Debt held by the public” and “debt held by federal government accounts” here are components of Gross Federal Debt.
